WHAT IS Aikido?
Aikido is a young Budo art, which was developed only in this century.
O Sensei Morihei Ueshiba, the founder describes it as follows:
Aikido; Because ai (= harmony) forms a unity with ki (= love), I decided to call my form of Budo "ai ki do", although the term aiki is very old. This term, which was used by warriors in the past, differs fundamentally from the content I attach to this term.
Aiki is not a fighting technique, not a technique to defeat the enemy. It is a way to bring the world back into harmony and to let all people become one family.
True Budo is a work of love. It is the work of making true life possible for all living beings. It does not mean killing or fighting 'everyone against everyone'.
Budo doesn't mean throwing down the opponent with our physical strength. Nor does it mean destroying the world by force of arms.
True Budo means recognizing the essence of the universe, preserving peace, and promoting, protecting, and caring for all living beings in nature. The Budo training means to take over the love, which promotes, protects and cares for all living beings according to their needs, and to take up and make use of this love in our mind and for our body.
True Budo is loving protection of all living beings in the sense of reconciliation. Reconciliation means to allow the completion of the mission of every human being.
Aikido requires a way of thinking that serves the peace of all mankind - and not a human being who thinks he is strong and whose only goal is to defeat his opponent.
It is a mistake to think that Budo means to have an opponent or enemy, to have someone you can be stronger with, someone you want or need to defeat. True Budo means becoming one with the universe. For this reason, neither competition nor losing or winning is true Budo.
True Budo knows no losing. "Never losing" means never fighting.
In Aikido we do not train to become strong or to throw the opponent to the ground. On the contrary: we train in the hope of being useful, however small our role may be in the task of bringing peace to humanity. Through this hope we become one with the universe.
When an enemy tries to fight with me - with the universe itself, so to speak - he must disturb the harmony of the universe. Already the moment he thinks of a fight with me, he is defeated ... Those whose thoughts go the wrong way or whose thoughts are disharmonic have lost from the beginning.
In Aikido you have to train conscientiously and strictly all the time. Thereby you should not become careless and practice full of devotion. You must constantly strive to make progress. At the same time, you must constantly be aware of what you have just done. As a result you will develop and strengthen your body and it will be in balance with your mind.
Aiki has a form and is formless at the same time. Aiki is a life that has a certain form and flows and changes at the same time.
It expresses itself by changing. A form without form is a word and a poem that describes the universe as boundless.
AI = harmony, love, friendship
KI = spirit, spiritual power, soul, energy, will power
DO = path
The path of the connection between body and mind
